CHAPTER 17

I didn’t get much sleep that night. The next morning, I lay in bed wondering what I should do. I knew I should inform Beau about the connection to the bank robbery and the missing map. I’d love to ask him if a certain bluebonnet paperweight had been logged into evidence. The right thing to do would be to tell him about the link, no matter how tenuous, between Marcus Best and the murder victim, but I couldn’t. Because anything I told Beau would implicate my uncle as well.

Whatever liberties Beau might afford me did not extend to my immediate family. He wouldn’t go easy on my uncle any more than he’d cut my mom a break on a speeding ticket.

When my phone buzzed with an incoming call, I glanced at the screen and was unsurprised to see it was Beau. Not only did we seem to have some kind of annoying psychic connection where he always popped up the minute I started thinking about him, but he was pretty much the only person in the world who called me instead of texting. Well, him and my mom.

I picked up. “Hello?”

“Morning, Junebug. Hope I didn’t wake you.”

I sat up in bed. “Nah, I’m up.”

“Since we missed our date last Saturday, can I take you out to lunch today?”

I blinked at my clock. He called me before nine a.m. for that? “I’ve got errands to run this morning, and I’m working the afternoon shift at the shop.” I deliberately didn’t mention that Maggie and I were long overdue for a serious conversation with our mom’s new boyfriend. If we managed to dig up any dirt on him that didn’t also lead back to my uncle, I’d be happy to share it with Beau, but not a second before that.

“And you close at, what, seven?” he asked.

“Yup.”

“Okay then, I’ll pick you up at seven.”

“Huh? What?”

“For our date,” he said. “See ya at seven.” He disconnected. I didn’t even remember agreeing to go out on a date with him tonight. Beau was either annoyingly smooth or smoothly annoying—I just didn’t know which.

I got ready for the day and considered making breakfast, but since I planned on hitting the bakery on the way to work, I would pick up something there instead. I took my time picking out my outfit—but not because I had a date with Beau tonight. No, siree. I selected my white and yellow R.E.M. Out of Time concert shirt. It was one of my favorites simply for the fact that it was the softest, and it didn’t hurt that now I’d be humming “Shiny Happy People” to myself all morning. I dug through my collection of glasses to find my rainbow ones since they were the only pair I owned with yellow on them.

There was a line at the bakery, which was probably a good thing since if I’d been the only customer, I’d be tempted to buy one (or two) of everything. By the time it was my turn at the counter, I was ready to eat the entire display case.
